Abell 426

Abell 426, Galaxy Cluster in Perseus, centered on NGC 1272 (type E) along with NGC 1275 (type E pec, also identified as Caldwell 24, Perseus A and 3C84) left of center.  Taken over several nights in Nov and Dec 2007 with a DSI Pro II and Outback Cooler.  Scope used was a C8NGT (8" Newtonian f5) on an ASGT mount.  LRGB subframes were 3 minutes resulting in the following total exposures L:R:G:B (min) = 399:84:87:87.  Color balance was achieved via numerically scaled channels.  Captured with Envisage, calibrated and sigma combined in Iris with other processing using FITZ, PixInsight LE and Photoshop CS.    North is up.

Sorry...I tried to hit 5 stars but it only registerd 3.....IT SHOULD BE 5

Tremendous image! Very, very nice filamentary detail of NGC1275. I tried the same object last year with a 10” and couldn’t get that amount of structure. You should try and add some H-alpha if possible; it would really increase the effect of that most strange galaxy.

Thanks Cogeto, I had thought of trying H-alpha, but the galaxy is redshifted so the rest frame H-alpha is shifted about 115 angstroms to the red. It might work though to try longer R channel integrations to bring out the filaments better.

James ....Absolutly. 11.5nm with a z factor of 0.01754. I totaly zoned on that one. Luckly however a SII filter operating around 671nm would shift blue because of the optical path length difference of the coating and once placed in your f5 system would knock things down a few nm ...hhhmmmm to around 668.2

good luck
