Composite image of 5 sec, 30 sec and 2 Min exposures. DSI III camera on 80ED piggybacked on LX200GPS. Guided with DSI Pro. Luminesence image only, False Ha color added with Photoshop Actions. Image capture with Envisage, aligned and combined in ASIP. Layers, levels, curves and high pass filter in CS2.

Greetings friends!

I shot this photo of M42 from my front yard in Simi Valley California on 1/11/08. Still need to do work on my image processing, but I thought I nailed the focus. Love to hear any comments or suggestions on how I can improve!

Equipment used: Meade LX90 8" LNT with DSI II and Meade f/3.3 focal reducer. 30 images at 13 second exposure stacked and processed in MaxIm 4 DL.

Took 60 images each at 30, 15, 5 and 1 second(s). Aligned and Combined in AS IP. Layered in CS2 and combined in 4 layers. Curves and levels in CS2. False Ha color added with PS Action. Taken through an Orion 80ED with .5 Focal reducer and DSI Pro. Guided with 10" LX200GPS and DSI color.

Jewels of the Summer Sky

The Trifid (NGC6514) and Lagoon (NGC6530) Nebulas in Sagittarius: These two beautiful nebulae lie in the constellation Sagittarius and lie about 2,300 light-years away. The Trifid Nebula is about 18 light-years across and is best seen with moderate size scopes, while the Lagoon nebula is 45 light-years across and can easily be seen with your naked eyes from a dark site. The Trifid’s three dark lanes divide this nebula into three parts, familiar on photographs, giving it the name TRIFID. The pinkish red clouds shine by excited hydrogen molecules receiving energy from stars inside, while the smaller blue “reflection” nebula is simply reflected starlight off of intergalactic dust.
The Lagoon Nebula is a beautiful diffuse nebula that gets its name from the telescopic view, which appears like a tropical island surrounded by a coral reef. These vast clouds shine by excited hydrogen atoms from stars forming inside, and there are plenty of stellar eggs, or "Globules" in this nebula detected as small lumps of dark cloud. The central stars in the Lagoon nebula is an open star cluster (NGC6530) and is actually located further away behind the Lagoon Nebula.

This is a montage of two 30 minute exposures with the Meade LXD75 8" Schmidt Newtonian. The images were captured at prime focus with an inexpensive Olympus OM-1 SLR and Fuji Provia 400F slide film. The scope was manually guided with a 910mm focal length guidescope. Fujichrome 400F Provia is a fine grained slide film with excellent Ha (red) and blue response.
