Jupiter Planetary System - w/Callisto Transit - 22nd. June 2005 - CDIP Img 13

Object name / Catalog Number: Jupiter with (left to right) Europa, Callisto transit, Ganymede & Io

Camera (specific model): DSI col.1 - Gain 90/offset 50

Number of Exposures & Exposure length: 250 exposures - 0.125sec/exp.

Scope: Model, Aperture and F ratio: 8" Nexstar 8i SE with X2 barlow

Filters used: None

Image Capture Software: Envisage

Processing software: Registax 2 for stacking. Then with Photo Shop 7.

Guide camera/scope (if guided imaging used):None

Other (optional): This image is very important to me because it was taken only 1 month after getting my first ccd camera and managing to capture a very rare moment with all 4 major moons in the field of view,  with a transit, and in addition the Red Spot in view. Conditions were clear. Date 22nd. June 2005.

Point of Interest is the large shadow of Callisto. This may be due to the fact that the shadow fell on the polar side of the planet, thus distributing the shadow over a larger area than normal. This is the interpretation of those who I contacted about it.

"Qualified" - Score 3

1) Focus/Sharpness - No
2) Composition - Yes, very nicely done with moons, transit and Red Spot! :o)
3) Star Quality - Yes, color is good
4) Processing Skills - No, image is over-sharpened and processed, creating artifacts.
5) Exposure/Depth/Detail - No, image is over-exposed and over-sharpened, resulting is loss of detail and grainy appearance.
6) Technical Bonus - Yes - Special merit bonus for composition and merit of subject with 4 moons, transit and Red Spot present in one image. Nice!

This is an excellent presentation for someone with 1 month's experience. The high contrast of the subject and rapid surface motion make Jupiter a tough target! The composition is very nice, and as you rightfully note, the image is more compelling due to the presence of the four moons, visible transit and Red Spot!

The core of Jupiter blows out very easily, so it is best to intentionally under-exposure it a bit. When conditions and results are not optimal, consider using a smaller presentation size. This image looks much sharper at 50% size. The temptation is almost always to present planets in a larger size than the data supports ;o)
